Massachusetts may be able to outperform the previous year.

As DraftKings continues to hold the top rank, Massachusetts may be able to outperform the previous year.

May was the second consecutive month in which player spending on sports betting in Massachusetts declined, despite the fact that the Bay State was able to record an increase in handling from the previous year to the current year itself.
January months for sports betting in Massachusetts
It was 32.4% greater than May of the previous year, with a total betting handle of $587.3 million (£462.7 million/€547.6 million), yet it was 2.7% lower than the $603.3 million that was wagered in Massachusetts in April of this year.

A total of 98% of all bets placed were placed online, and this was the same across all six sites that were active in the state.

This equalled to $57.0 million in taxable betting revenue for the month of May, which is a measurement of revenue.  The monthly total is 4.0% lower than the $59.4 million the previous year.  It is, however, a 16.1% rise from the $49.1 million that was reported in April of this year.

For the month of May, online betting was responsible for $56.9 million of the total taxable revenue.  When compared to this, the retail betting sector contributed only $105,629 to the total.

In the month of May, the overall revenue hold across all operators reached 10%.

There were nine weekend days in May of 2024, compared to eight weekend days in May 2023, according to a note written by an analyst at Deutsche Bank about the month's numbers. This indicates that the calendar in May was beneficial for betting and gaming.

The state of Massachusetts remains in the lead for DraftKings.
During the month of May, DraftKings maintained its position as the leading online gambling destination in the state by generating $28.3 million in revenue from $299.5 million in wagers.

Flutter Entertainment, which owns FanDuel, came in second place once more with a revenue of $19.9 million from a handle of $172.4 million.  BetMGM came in second with $3.0 million with $39.3 million in wagers placed.

ESPN Bet reported a revenue of $2.5 million off a handle of $25.9 million.  Bets of $19.8 million brought in $1.7 million for the fanatics.  After a total of $20.1 million, Caesars finished the online market with $1.5 million.

In terms of the retail sector, Encore Boston Harbour was the market leader, bringing in $540,882 in revenue from wagers totalling $5.5 million.  Additionally, Plainridge Park Casino reported a revenue of $133,573 from a total handle of $3.6 million.

Nevertheless, MGM Springfield reported a loss of $568,834 from a total of $1.1 million in wagers during the month of May.

In May, casino revenue surpassed $98.0 million.
In May, revenue from land-based casinos reached $98.0 million.  This is 2.6% lower than the amount of $100.6 million that was brought in the previous year, but it is somewhat higher than the $97.5 million that was brought in during the month of April this year.

Table games brought in $29.3 million for the month, while slot machines brought in $68.7 million of the total revenue for the casino.

With a total revenue of $61.2 million, Encore Boston Harbour was able to secure the top rank.  Plainridge Park Casino came in second with $14.4 million, followed by MGM Springfield with $22.4 million.

The gaming taxes in Massachusetts will remain unchanged.
Sports betting brought in $11.5 million in tax revenue for the state of Massachusetts in May, while land-based casino gaming brought in $28.0 million.

A plan to raise the tax rate from 20% to 51% was shot down by the legislature of Massachusetts on May 23 after it was presented.

Senator John Keenan was the one who was responsible for the idea in the Bay State, and it was intended to be incorporated into the state budget.  During the course of the discussion, Keenan emphasised the issue of problem gambling and the concept that operators ought to pay for the treatment of individuals who develop an addiction.

On the other hand, Massachusetts already has some of the most rigorous regulations regarding responsible gaming in the country, and it also has the most appropriately financed problem gambling program in the United States.
